Fort Charlotte overlooks the harbor and is the largest of the island’s three forts. It’s an imposing structure of massive stone blocks, moats, and bridges. Built in 1788, Fort Charlotte guards the entrance to the harbor. Within this massive stone structure, you can wander a maze of passageways and tiny rooms, dungeons and barracks, speculating as to how the garrison could have survived in the damp atmosphere. Official guides in colorful uniforms will take you on a tour of the old fort, barking their commentaries like old-time drill sergeants on the parade ground. At the end of it all you’ll leave, a little awed, and find yourself looking backward over your shoulder at the immense edifice rising behind you. No admission charge.
